Overview of
“Higher Standards”

The film is about a man named John Perry, who is in his early 20’s and lives with his wife, Rachael Perry. At the moment they are having financial difficulties and depend on John’s job for their income. John has been off ill from work for a week and is anxious to return as Ofsted has just recently raised their expectations for education. He also got a bad review from the Ofsted inspector, who visited the school, he is also aware that the recession is effecting the school and downsizing staff is inevitable. He returns to work and is asked to make a meeting with the Head Teacher, the meeting results with him being put on caution. One week later another meeting has been arranged and he is given the news that he has been made redundant. Crushed by the news he returns home to break the news to his wife, she reassures him that everything will be fine and that he will have a new job soon.

Weeks have passed and John is jobless, he has interviewed for lots of jobs but no one offered him one. As the weeks passed on he started to interview for jobs he was over qualified for, until he started to resort to crimes. At first it was piety theft, such as stealing a loaf of bread from the shop. But the crimes became more serious and he started to involve himself with the wrong crowd, making a living off the making and distribution of drugs. His wife found out and begged him to stop or otherwise she would leave him, he lied and said he would but she knew he was lying. She packed her bags and left, John became depressed and to help distract him from the pain of losing his wife, he submerges himself into a life of crime. Angry but genuinely wanting to help John, Rachael reported him to the police so that he can fight his new found addiction to crime. John is sentenced 6 years in prison and the film ends with him beginning his new life in prison.
